The Tri County region (Peoria, Woodford, and Tazewell County) is still sitting at 16 confirmed cases of COVID-19. But health officials and local Government leaders are emphasizing the lack of increase does not mean this virus should be taken any less seriously.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis said his office has gotten calls of people playing volleyball games, holding backyard parties and much more. All clearly in violation of the stay at home order.
He said that we owe it to each-other to be more vigilant and attempt to keep the spread of this virus at bay.
"Let there be no mistake, people will die in Peoria because of COVID-19. Not a scare tactic, it's the truth." said Mayor Ardis
To show the gravity of COVID-19, Ardis said law enforcement will be made available to educate citizens on the stay at home order.
"If you see a gathering of people you may call the non emergency police department number. When practical, the Peoria Police Department will look into the call and remind the attendees of the executive order."
Mayor Ardis also implored essential employers to take steps to keep their workers and those they serve healthy.
"By lessening the number of people in your location at one time and to provide strict guidance to keep safe spacing inside your establishment. Minimizing handling of products is also essential."
So what is considered an essential gathering where having more than 10 people is required?
"Are you receiving an essential service from that and is that the only mechanism that you are able to utilize." said Monica Hendrickson with the Peoria County/City Health Department
She said while numbers in the Chicago land area may seem more staggering this is not isolated to big cities.
"The reason why you're seeing the numbers in those areas at that level is because of high population density but at the same time it does not mean we are immune to it, it just means from a transmission standpoint as long as we do that compliance and try to control it, we're going to be in better shape."
She said this is more than just stopping people from getting sick initially , but helping people recover after contracting the virus.
"Based on complications they are still receiving medical care and understanding that this is a long recovery for them."
