Riot Games on Monday announced a world championship for its popular PC and mobile game Teamfight Tactics with the Teamfight Tactics: Galaxies Championship. Sixteen players from around the world will compete for a grand prize of $200,000 in a competition that will take place later this year, with the exact date still to be determined. There will be eight regional qualifiers to determine the field, including in North America, China, Europe, South Korea, Japan and Latin America.
"With the Teamfight Tactics: Galaxies Championship, we want to reward all of the players who dedicate their time to mastering Teamfight Tactics and provide an additional goal that exists beyond reaching the top of the ladder," Whalen Rozelle, director of global esports at Riot Games, said in a news release. "To support this, we are creating a clear path to the championship that will be globally accessible through both the in-game ladder and online tournaments."
Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is an eight-person, free-for-all strategy game in which each player combines League of Legends (LoL) champions and items in different formations to defeat the seven other players in a match. Along with TFT, Riot Games also leads the most-watched esport in the world, League of Legends, whose world championship in 2019 was viewed by over 100 million people worldwide. The company also released its first-person shooter, VALORANT, into closed beta last week, with the game breaking the record for single-day hours watched in a single game category on Twitch with 34 million.
