FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Southeast Fort Wayne residents get the chance to provide ideas for how to make their part of town a better place to live, work and shop.
A Facebook Live event was scheduled to happen Wednesday at 6 p.m., centering on a discussion about encouraging new investment in the southeast quadrant.
Residents could monitor and participate in the discussion by going to 6th District city councilwoman Sharon Tucker's Facebook page.
Tucker partnered with the city of Fort Wayne Planning and Policy Department to draft recommendations in what's called "Southeast Strategy Update 2020".
It lays out steps for increasing investment in the southeast quadrant over the next ten years.
The plan seeks to focus on investment in four key areas-- the Southtown area, the McKinnie Avenue and South Anthony Boulevard area, Calhoun Street between Pontiac and Grand Streets, and Pontiac between Calhoun and South Anthony.
It also is crafted to help budding entrepreneurs get started, giving them access to low-interest loans and grants and more real estate options.
We talked to a long-time professional photographer who operates out of space in a strip mall at Anthony and McKinnie.
"We have a lot of new entrepreneurs coming up on this southside of town and they're all looking for someplace to raise a new business, and new businesses should be raised on this side, to help the community out," said William Miller with Starlight Photography.
"Even though the strategy is going along, the city and I and Southeast Area Partnership, we've already started working on some of these initiatives, so I believe that it will be sooner rather than later, but reality says it takes time," said Sharon Tucker.
The Southeast Strategy Update 2020 also recommends some land re-zoning in key areas, so that homeowners don't have to live next to commercial and industrial businesses that generate traffic and noise.
