Kids all over the Tri-State area have just started school or begin to head back to the classroom this week.

With COVID-19 cases still spiking, health and safety are on the top of everyone's minds.

So what are school districts doing if kids have to go see the nurse?

At Quincy Public Schools, the process is changing and parents should know that the protocols look different this year.

The district has started a new system for its nurses to try to keep kids separated as much as possible.

Most of the schools have two nurses that share an office, but now those two nurses will be separated into a healthy office and a sick office.

School officials said they’re starting this system because they expect students to be coming into the nurses office with COVID-19 symptoms at some point during the school year.

The goal is to make sure that all students who use the nurses office won't be put at risk for COVID-19.

“Kids who have medications that they need to take at school, we have some students who are diabetic, any kind of procedures that they would get or paperwork. Anything where they’re not feeling sick, they would go to the healthy office," said Brandy Kirby, Quincy Public Schools nursing director.

Kirby said school nurses have also received extra training and instruction this year to be able to spot COVID-19 symptoms and stop the spread.

Nurses will work with an official from the health department to see if students test positive.

School officials hope this will significantly slow the spread of the virus in classrooms.

“They would have to go back 48 hours from when they started showing symptoms or tested positive and they would figure out who all they were in contact with, look at those classrooms and see who was within 6 feet of that student for longer than 15 minutes and figure out who else needs to quarantine as a close contact," Kirby said.

Quincy schools have other measures in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

All students will be required to wear face masks or face shields throughout the entire day.

Students will also be separated into designated sections of the school and won’t come in contact with kids from other sections. This is in hopes of minimizing possible exposure
