Donald Trump's Election Strategy Has 'No Chance' - Newsweek

Donald Trump's risky strategy to aggressively campaign in strong blue states as part of his 2024 re-election strategy is doomed to fail, a political expert has said.

The former president, the overwhelming favorite in the GOP primary, said he will invest campaign time and resources in Democratic strongholds such as New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Minnesota and Virginia, suggesting some of them could be won in November.

In an interview with Breitbart, Trump said his "heavy play" for states which have not voted for a Republican candidate for years may be "foolish" knowing that his 2024 campaign would be better suited in trying to win back key states such as Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and Pennsylvania—all of which Biden won in 2020. Trump said he will not battle as hard to win the blue states as he would the traditional battlegrounds.

"I'm going to do rallies, I'm going to do speeches, I'm going to work them," Trump said. "That doesn't mean I'm going to work them as hard as I work Pennsylvania, where I'm doing very well."

Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic strategist based in New York, said that Trump's hopes of flipping strong blue states in 2024 will likely be unsuccessful, although it highlights the potential issues that Biden faces in trying to win over voters himself nationwide.

"This is more likely a threat. Trump has no chance to win New York or California, for example, certainly the most Democratic in the nation," Sheinkopf told Newsweek.

"Trump will see where Biden's weaknesses—blame for economic issues—have created sufficient resentment in normally Democratic performing states. Where there is anger, there will be Trump."

As part of his "heavy move" strategy in New York, Trump said he is also looking into the option of holding a campaign rally in the iconic Madison Square Garden, the Manhattan venue the former president called "the belly of the beast."

"I believe we have a chance to win New York. I believe we have a chance to win New Jersey," Trump said, suggesting his hardline immigration policies may appeal to voters in the states.

"You have migrants living on Madison Avenue. You can't get into a hospital. You can't get into a school. You go to a public school and half the kids are sitting there and have no idea what the teacher is saying," Trump said. "You can't get into these schools. I think it's really bad and I think the people in New York and New Jersey [...] it would have been semi-unthinkable but I think these are states that can be won."

Trump spent most of his life living in New York, before moving to D.C. after he was elected president in 2016. Since he left office in 2021, Trump has mainly spent his time at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, as well as his Bedminster property in New Jersey.

Trump was defeated by Biden in the 2020 presidential election in New York by 23 points, as well as by his 2016 Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.

New Jersey has not voted for a Republican candidate since George H. Bush in 1988, with Minnesota voting for a Democrat president for the past several decades, with the last GOP winner being Richard Nixon in 1972.
