Conservative upstate Republicans in South Carolina will press GOP voters to vote in the primary for Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders in an effort to support the candidate they think has the weakest general election prospects opposite President Trump.
The bid to boost Sanders in the "first in the South" primary is also an attempt to drive Democrats to close future state primaries and not allow Republicans to participate, the Post and Courier reports. South Carolina's open primaries allow participation by voters in either party's contest and they need not register by party. Republican activists have sought to close the primaries in favor of what they believe would create a more ideologically pure process.
The South Carolina GOP voted to eliminate this year's presidential primary, making the Democratic election on Feb. 29 the state's sole primary event.
GOP leaders from Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson, and upstate tea party activist groups are behind the effort, which they plan to announce Thursday in a news conference at the Greenville GOP headquarters. They likened the plan to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" in 2008, where Limbaugh pushed Republicans to cast a vote for Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in the primary to keep her in the race. "You are to go out and sustain the primary season by virtue of voting for Hillary Clinton," Limbaugh said at the time.
Greenville GOP chairman Nate Leupp told the Post and Courier that Sanders "is the most socialistic, liberal candidate running" in the Democratic primaries. "So we feel we can make a strong point that our Democratic state legislators need to help work to close our primaries so it protects them as well as the Republican brand," he said.
