Triangle Strategy is the newest RPG to hit the Switch. Like many modern RPGs, this game is built on choices. There is a system in the game that allows characters to vote on binary decisions. This is called the Scales of Justice. One of the first decisions players will make involves visiting one nation over another.

This may seem like a simple decision, and it is, but the choices get harder to make as a Triangle Strategy rolls on. Players must convince their party to side with them. It’s important to gather the evidence before the voting goes down to help influence decisions. Talk to every NPC in town or on the map. It could unlock new dialogue choices. Now, as for Aesfrost vs Hyzante, here is how things go down.

6 The Backstory On The Choice

Triangle Strategy begins with a mine being discovered in Glenbrook territory. Rather than hoarding it to themselves, the kingdom decides to invite the other two nations to share in the wealth. It was done to bring about peace. After a banquet commemorating the occasion, Serenoa is invited to accompany one of the two nations back to their country.

This is the first major decision players will have. At this point the game will warn players that going forward, these decisions will pop up more frequently. The decision here is smaller in scale than what players may realize. The direct outcome will be gaining one of two new party members. In the grand scale of the story, whichever kingdom players decide to visit won’t change much.

5 Choosing Aesfrost

Let’s begin first with visiting Aesfrost. As the name might imply, Aesfrost is a frigid region of ice and snow. This is where Serenoa’s bride-to-be, Frederica, is from. She is sort of an outcast because of her lineage as a Rosellan. Her people are treated as second-class citizens because of something that they did in the past. Even though Aesfrost is not as cold toward her people, her upper-crust family does hold some resentment.

Backstory aside, the main mission of this visit will see Serenoa and his party being roped into a back alley salt trade. The kingdom asks him to help stop this black market from going on any further. So, a sting operation is set up. Once players clear out the criminals, they will be rewarded with one of the greatest things an RPG can bestow, a new party member. Rudolph is an archer and the second of Triangle Strategy.

4 The Reward For Aesfrost

Rudolph is an ex-criminal. He was roped into helping with the sting to get out of jail time. This bargain was mostly a ruse, which is why he runs away with Serenoa instead. He is the second bow user that will join the great army of House Wolffort, the other being Hughette.

Both bowmen have their uses in battle. Hughette has a shorter range but she can fly to high places as well as travel greater distances. Rudolph doesn’t need to travel that far because his specialty is long-ranged fighting. He is the sniper of the group, which can come in handy. His arrows can fly greater distances and impact enemies harder as well.

3 Choosing Hyzante

Visiting Hyzante instead will show players how a society that bases its power on salt lives. Yes, the idea that salt runs the world is a bit silly. The material is versatile, though, so it’s not a complete fantasy only an RPG could think of. The society of Hyzante is rather religious as well. They follow a hierophant and listen only to their teachings, which are passed along to an advisor. Believe in the salt. Don’t betray the salt. Then, and only then, will life be good.

The main mission of this campaign is set up similarly to Rudolph’s. Serenoa chooses to help stop a rebellion from breaking out. After they do, one of the researchers, Corentin, will decide to leave Hyzante to be with Serenoa’s crew. He reveals that he almost took part in the rebellion as well. Corentin wants to make up for his weakness by joining a greater cause and to be able to study without facing religious prosecution.

2 The Reward For Hyzante

Corentin joins the battle before players get to recruit him officially. He is the second offensive magic-user players can recruit. He uses ice magic, which is a fun complement to Frederica’s fire ability. His basic ice attack works similar to Frederica’s Scorch attack. It can hit enemies in a cross pattern ranging from five squares.

He has another ability that can create an ice wall. To pass it, enemies must physically damage it. Building ice walls can help reroute enemies, which is a great power to have in a strategy RPG like Triangle Strategy. Managing TP, which is this game’s version of magic points, can be tricky though. Players must spend skills wisely.

1 What’s The Best Choice?

The aftermath of either decision will play out the same. Visiting one country will not stop either of them in the war to come. The only difference, as mentioned earlier, is the reward of one of two new party members. They both have their uses. Corentin and Rudolph are ranged fighters which are rare at this point in the game. The more ranged fighters a party has in a strategy RPG like Triangle Strategy, the better.

It’s about balance. Corentin has the advantage of being able to attack multiple enemies at once. That ice wall is also great. Rudolph can‘t hit multiple targets but his range and power are greater. There is a right choice to make or at least a well-informed one. Go with Rudolph. Players will meet another mage a few chapters later, Narve, who can use, wind, lightning, fire, and ice magic. It takes a longer time to get another bow user like Rudolph. That’s why he is the better choice. Again, it’s all about creating a balanced team in an RPG.
