Medical experts believe the drug, made up of four different elements and emerging in KP, can cause death within a few days of its use
ANF official says no one arrested carrying 10-wheeler so far but they are bracing for the new challenge
peshawar - A recently emerged drug in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, known as 10-wheeler, has panicked parents and other segments of society as the drug can even cause death through cardiac arrest within a few days of its usage by an addict.
The drug is called 10-wheeler, named after a heavy vehicle and its name suggests the strength and high intensity of intoxication it can cause to a person using it.
The reports suggest that the 10-wheeler drug is made up of four different elements: Ephedrine, Cocaine, Fentanyl and Phentermine.
Speaking to The Nation, Prof Dr Khalid Mufti, a noted psychiatrist based in Peshawar, said that 10-wheeler is a new drug and first it needs to be tested to know about the actual damage it can cause to human health. He said that so far, he has not received any patient of 10-wheeler in his Ibadat Hospital.
“We have a laboratory where we conduct urine analysis, through which we determine the kinds of drugs a patient has abused, such as charas, opium, cocaine, etc,” Dr Khalid Mufti added.
He said, however, that cocaine is very expensive and very few people use it, compared to other drugs like charas and opium.
Dr Khalid Mufti said that Ephedrine is also used in cough syrup and breathing ailment. “Cocaine is more dangerous of all the four as it can lead to visual or audio hallucinations, high blood pressure, stroke, bleeding, and brain damage,” he added.
Discussing the other element, he said Fentanyl disturbs perceptions; it is a drug that affects nervous system and brain just like heroin and it is also administered to patients in extreme pain such as in cases of surgeries.
The third element of the drug, i.e. Ephedrine, is used to maintain blood pressure in conditions of post-anaesthesia operation. However, reports suggest that Ephedrine has been banned in some countries as it can create anxiety and insomnia in a patient.
“I believe that awareness on this drug and highlighting it in the media can be a disservice to society as awareness may lead to its spread in society and its more addiction. I think that the Anti-Narcotics Force, police, journalists, and other segments should avoid unnecessary publicity of this drug but instead it should be countered through timely actions,” the psychiatrist said.
Medical experts say the sale of all the four mentioned drugs should be banned without a physician’s prescription, while when mixed, the resultant drug is more dangerous than even ice.
When contacted, an official of the Anti-Narcotics Force said that they have not yet got cases of the 10-wheeler drug but that the Force is trying to figure it out and start curbing its abuse.
Meanwhile, an official said on condition of anonymity that the emergence of the 10-wheeler drug can be a modus-operandi employed by anti-state elements in society.
“I believe that militants administered similar drugs to suicide bombers to lead them into hallucinations and make them believe that they were going into paradise the moment they exploded themselves,” he added.
