The legal team for the Girl Scouts has accused the Boy Scouts of America of stealing potential members over the past two years while engaging in “highly damaging” recruitment tactics, The New York Times reports.
What happened?
The so-called recruitment war between the two sides began in 2018 when the Cub Scouts announced it would accept girl recruits. In 2019, the Boy Scouts said it would also start accepting girls into the program. In response, the Girl Scouts sued the BSA over its move to rebrand as the Scouts BSA.
The Girl Scouts issued new lawsuit papers Thursday that accused the BSA of intentionally trying to snag Girl Scout recruits, according to The Associated Press.
- “For the last century, the Girl Scouts trademark has become understood to designate the source of scouting services for girls,” the filing said. “Now, because of what Boy Scouts has done, that distinctiveness is being slowly eroded, and the law affords Girl Scouts a remedy to stop such a further loss of distinctiveness.”
- “As a result of Boy Scouts’ infringement, parents have mistakenly enrolled their daughters in Boy Scouts thinking it was Girl Scouts.”
- “The parties’ programs, which have many similarities, are now directly competitive,” the Girls Scouts maintained.
What’s the response?
The Boy Scouts said in a statement that the Girl Scouts have started a “ground war.”
- “To imply that confusion is a prevailing reason for their choice is not only inaccurate — with no legally admissible instance of this offered to date in the case — but it is also dismissive of the decisions of more than 120,000 girls and young women who have joined Cub Scouts or Scouts BSA since the programs became available to them.” the Boy Scouts wrote.

The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have seen membership numbers decline as sports leagues and family schedules increased, according to The Associated Press.
