Strategy and business transformation skills backed up by a twenty-year record of success inside the company helped Eli Lilly and Company Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi land its top spot finance spot.
The pharmaceutical company named Ashkenazi in the role on Tuesday, February 9, after most recently serving as the senior vice president, controller, and chief financial officer of Lilly Research Laboratories. Ashkenazi succeeds Josh Smiley, who resigned from the company over alleged inappropriate communications with employees.
Ashkanazi confirms the trend of companies that are reshaping their CFO roles with increased focus in directing corporate strategy, business transformation, mitigating risk, while handling the traditional finance and accounting duties.
According to a recent CFO Drive article, over 600 CFO's surveyed by Argyle Advisory and Grant Thorton pre and post-pandemic in September noted their roles as a change agent and strategist took more of their time now than their traditional finance roles. This notes a big change from surveys before the pandemic started.
Strategy and transformation experience helped Merck’s incoming CEO Bob Davis land his recent promotion from CFO. Akin to Ashkenzi, Davis rose through Eli Lily and Company and Baxter Healthcare's ranks before landing at Merck.
Ashkenazi has been at Eli Lilly for almost 20 years in a variety of senior finance roles. She oversaw the company's commercial businesses and those for research and development, manufacturing and quality, and G&A functions. She also led the corporate strategic planning team and business transformation office.
Before joining Lilly, she worked in financial services at Ma'alot Standard & Poor's and at Ha'poalim Bank in Israel. Ashkenazi earned a bachelor’s degree from the Hebrew University in finance and economics and a master of business administration from Tel Aviv University.
"Lilly's core values are integrity, excellence, and respect for people. We expect all employees to live these values, and we expect exemplary conduct from our executives at all times," said David A. Ricks, Lilly chairman, and chief executive officer. "We are confident in Anat's ability to serve as our next CFO has given her impeccable track record of leadership and business success across nearly all major parts of the company, most recently as corporate controller and head of strategy."
