Ahead of Saturday’s match away at Milton Keynes Dons (managed by Russell Martin) in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.
Here’s what sedgleyimp said:
1. Don’t give the game next week any thought and consideration until after 5pm on Saturday. It would be very easy to let your mind go beyond this Saturday’s match to who we are playing midweek. Put that match to the back of your mind otherwise, the concentration and professionalism that will be required on Saturday might be lacking. Get the three points then think about Liverpool.
2. Counter-attack and hunt in groups. This tactic has worked really well since the start of the season and needs to be continued on Saturday. It is a tactic which is quite intensive but we do seem to have vibrant players capable of playing at a high tempo for the full ninety minutes. Play with intensity, speed of thought and movement and we have an excellent chance of getting all three points.
3. Be mindful of set plays. The only very slight question mark so far this season has been our defending of corners and other set plays close to our area. It was noticeable yesterday that Bradford’s only real threat was their corners where they packed the six yard box. The only two goals we have conceded this season have been from dead ball crosses into the box. Against Bradford it seemed that Palmer was looking to come off his line a little more now he is aware of the defenders in front of him, but dealing with those crosses will need improvement. This also will require not giving away silly free-kicks close to our box, something which has also occurred in a couple of games.

1. Lincoln are on a winning run but the games are coming thick and fast. We will need to keep the players fit and fresh in the coming months but winning also helps keep you invigorated. On Wednesday Morton and Melbourne got a start and it didn’t seem to have an adverse effect. A steady core to the team with a couple of tweaks each time might be the way to go. We have Bridcutt, Hopper and Elbouzedi champing at the bit, so get them in. Whoever misses out will be able to bring that extra bit on zest to the next match, whoever that may be.
2. Winning runs mean you are doing something right but also that things are going your way. Our defending of crosses has been patchy at best but we haven’t been punished. Our luck won’t last unless we improve, so we need to make sure we are making effective challenges in our box and not allowing any free headers. Do this and it won’t be luck if our goal stays intact again.
3. Show we have the right attitude. It would be easy to let our concentration wander towards the Liverpool match. A win on Saturday would be a real statement for all the right reasons. Last season away wins were like hen’s teeth, so a good result at the weekend would be a signal this squad of players have the makings of something.
