Forbestown, Calif. - The Bear Fire is now over 60% contained. Firefighters are working to fully contain an area right off Lower Forbestown Road.
One of the steps to achieve containment is making dozer lines.
"The dozer is a very important tool in what we do, because they can do a huge amount of work in a short amount of time. They can push down small trees just by running into them and knocking them over. They cut a ten foot wide path of bare dirt, in a matter of moments, where it would take hand crews minutes or hours to do what they do in seconds or minutes. It's an amazing tool, we use them all the time and they're a critical part of what we do here in the fire service” said Butte County Cal Fire PIO Rick Carhart.
Firefighters also cut line by hand to clear out some of the lower brush. This is to help work with the dozers.
"The hand crews is an additional piece to make this contingency line with additional safety measures. What it does is it minimizes erratic fire behavior, so it enhances the chances of success, for the contingency line to hold as part of our additional tool for firefighting,” explained Fire Captain Rick Crawford.
One other tactic being used is air attack and dropping phos chek.
"It's another tool that we have at our disposal to be able to slow the spread of a fire and cool off the fire, so firefighters can get in there and build those containment lines. Aircraft is able to get into the area quickly and they are able to spread a large amount of retardant on the ground, almost instantly. They can drop hundreds if not thousands of gallons of retardant on the ground in a strategic area that will slow the spread of the fire so the fire crews can get into the area and cut the containment line and keep the community safe," explained Rick Carhart.
All the firefighters in the area will be working overnight containing the area.
