Kate and William wed in 2011 in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey, but the pair soon returned to their home in Anglesey, North Wales. The Duke of Cambridge worked as an RAF helicopter pilot at the time and so had to be near the RAF Valley, Anglesey. After two years in Anglesey, the couple decided to adopt their first family dog, an English Cocker Spaniel called Lupo, who was born to a litter from Kate’s family pet.
However, some royal commentators believe Lupo had a particular purpose within the Cambridge unit — to stop Kate from being lonely.
Marie Claire explained that in 2018, William and Kate held a party for RAF families.
The article explained: “Kate reportedly admitted that they decided to get a dog to keep her company while William was away in the Falkland Islands.”
During the event, Kate opened up about the challenges she faced when William was away.
She said: “As someone whose husband has served, I know how hard it feels when a loved one leaves home to do the job they've trained for.
“When William served in the Falklands or went on search and rescue, I remember how it felt.
“But I can’t imagine how it feels when your loved ones are away on active service over Christmas or at those special family moments.”
Although Kate and William kept Lupo’s existence a secret for the first few months, he went on to have a particularly special place in their lives.

In January this year, Kate implied to workers at a children and parents centre in Cardiff that she had struggled without her husband throughout William’s piloting career.
She explained: “It was the first year and I’d just had George — William was still working with search and rescue — and we can up here and I had a tiny, tiny baby in the middle of Anglesey.
“It was so isolated, so cut off.
“I didn’t have any family around, and he was doing night shifts.
“So… if only I had had a centre like this.”
Shortly after George’s birth, however, the couple relocated to Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, and began to socialise with the neighbours.
The relocation meant William could start working as a pilot with the East Anglian Ambulance Service instead.
It was not until September 2017 that the couple moved out to Kensington Palace, where they currently live, so they could become full-time royals and prepare for Prince George to start attending school.
