Man Utd may use Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial tactic with Jadon Sancho transfer - Express

As things stand, it appears Manchester United’s hopes of signing Jadon Sancho on the cheap are over. It emerged over the weekend that Borussia Dortmund want at least £107million to part ways with the England international, who has sparkled in the Bundesliga this season. However, United could use a Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial tactic to meet Dortmund’s asking price - while looking respectable in the process.

When it comes to money, Manchester United have it in abundance.

They’re the richest club in the United Kingdom and, according to Deloitte’s Football Money League for 2020, the third-richest on the entire planet.

United recorded a huge income of £627.1m for the 2018/2019 season - despite it being a campaign to forget. Only Barcelona and Real Madrid recorded more.

Ed Woodward has spent his time in power helping to grow the club’s brand, even if results on the field of play have left much to be desired.

But, as things stand, United won’t be paying £107m outright to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund at the end of the campaign.

They’re mindful of how spending big on transfers would look at a time where the coronavirus crisis is still ongoing.

United prize themselves on their reputation and they’ve treated the pandemic with the utmost class so far, assisting the NHS and other emergency services while making a series of donations to different charities.

And they don’t want to undo all that hard work by going out and making Sancho one of the most-expensive players on the planet.

So, consequently, United could be tempted to use the same tactic previously utilised to sign Martial and Fernandes to get the Dortmund star in the door.

In 2015, the Red Devils left it late to sign Martial from Monaco on transfer deadline day.

They agreed a fee of £36million up front for the France international, who had gone under the radar in the weeks beforehand.

Monaco, though, viewed Martial as a player with the potential Ballon d’Or. And the savvy Ligue 1 giants insisted on numerous clauses in his contract as a result.

Should all be met, the United star could actually end up costing the Red Devils a massive £58m. They’ve already paid £44.5m to the French side.

In January, United struck a similar agreement with Sporting Lisbon for Fernandes.

Hargreaves said: “Jadon will know his own game and has to find what's best for him.

“But United have an exceptionally good group of young players coming through - and I think any top young player would want to be part of that.

“Obviously Liverpool and Manchester City have moved away from everyone else in the Premier League, but United would still be a team to join.

“Things go in cycles. Man United will be back - and the recruitment of a player like Jadon would help.

“He knows Manchester well because he was at City, but whoever gets him will be very fortunate.

“I know Sancho is going to cost a lot of money but you have a player who, potentially for the next decade, is going to be one of the most unique players to watch.

“Can he become a Ballon d'Or winner? Yes, because potentially he is off the charts. The impact he has had already has been quite astonishing.”
