It’s Star Wars Day in what has been one of the busier years for the franchise.
Hot on the heels of the third season of “The Mandalorian” and the recently released “Jedi: Survivor” game, the franchise is set to continue with two more series on the way, with both “Ahsoka” and “Skeleton Crew” arriving later this year. In addition, the second season of “Visions” is now out.
Then there are the other shows like “The Acolyte” and a second season of “Andor” in production, and the announcement of at least three new movies in the works, including one already dated for 2025.
Speaking with Empire, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says one mistake they have no intention of repeating as they did in the late 2010s is to churn out “Star Wars” films to meet a deadline. Rather, they plan to adopt the marketing strategy of another long-running franchise:
“I’ve often brought up [James] Bond. That’s every three or four years, and there wasn’t this pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year.
I feel that was very important to Star Wars. We have to eventise this. It’s much better to tell the truth that we’re going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made, and release them when they’re ready to be released.”
The result are three films examining the Jedi at very different points in history, with the ‘Mandoverse’ shows era being dubbed the new ‘present’ of the series:
“What we’re exploring is the evolution of the Jedi. We’re going very far back, we’re looking at the present, and now we’re moving 15 years after The Rise Of Skywalker.”
The latter of the three, which will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey, is the film targeting a 2025 launch and takes place after The First Order has fallen. Kennedy says: “The Jedi are in chaos – there’s even a question of how many exist anymore – and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her.”
Check out this sixty-second tribute to the franchise to celebrate “Star Wars” in time for May 4th.
