India and New Zealand showcased the beauty of Test cricket with an entertaining encounter in the first Test of a two-match series in Kanpur. In a game where the momentum of the match constantly kept changing, the two teams ultimately played out a draw.

The hosts were just one wicket away from victory as bad light forced an early closure of play in what was an extremely dramatic finish to the match. New Zealand's number 11 batting pair of Ajaz Patel and Rachindra Ravindra saved the day for the Black Caps with a heroic batting effort.

Although India got close to victory, a lot of questions will be raised about their performance in the match. Ajinkya Rahane is someone set to face a lot of scrutiny, not just for his poor batting form but also his captaincy.

Ex-Australian cricketer Shane Warne questioned Rahane's tactic in the final session. Warne was left 'very surprised' by India's decision to delay taking the new ball.

Warne took to Twitter to voice his frustration. He wrote, "Very surprised India didn’t take the new ball when it was available !!!! Strange they are still bowling with the old ball as light and overs running out !!!!!!"

The new ball as per convention became available after 80th over in New Zealand's innings. However, the Indian stand-in skipper Rahane opted to only use it after 84th over despite the fading light in Kanpur.

Talking about the match, chasing a total of 284 on the final day, New Zealand went for a safety-first approach and played for a draw. They began the day extremely well as opener Tom Lathan and nightwatchman William Somerville ensured they did not lose a single wicket in the first session of play.

However, the Indian spinners showed their magic soon and bought India to the brink of victory. Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin also dismissed three batsmen.

However, Patel and Ravindra batted almost nine overs to save the game for the visitors. Ravindra made his debut a memorable one playing 91 deliveries unbeaten on a tricky fifth-day pitch at Kanpur.

The teams will now move to Mumbai for the second and final game of the series. With all to play for, Virat Kohli will return to lead Team India in the series decider at the Wankhede Stadium.
