WASHINGTON, DC (WTAQ-WRN) — US Senator Ron Johnson objected to what’s typical practice in congress, delaying the COVID-19 relief bill.
Typically in congress they’ll move to skip the reading of a bill before moving to a vote, but Johnson objected to that on Thursday, which forced senate clerks to read every word of the 600 page bill out loud.
“I do feel bad about it. I apologize and thank them for doing it,” Johnson said during a press call.
Johnson says the bill was introduced just minutes before Democratic leaders had aimed to hold a vote. He says the 1.9 trillion stimulus bill is too much and that Democrats are including too much spending for too many items that aren’t related to fighting the coronavirus.
“But at the minimum, we bought ourselves 11 hours so their staffs can really evaluate this and start developing and crafting what I hope are effective amendments.”
The nearly 2 trillion dollar bill is expected to pass through the Senate on a tie vote, with Vice President Harris casting the tie breaker.
