TEXARKANA, Texas — The Texarkana College Board of Trustees approved their 2020/2022 Strategic Plan, as well as a request for scheduling software, in a regular meeting Monday morning.
The primary order of business for the board was to implement its two-year strategic plan, including the college's mission, core values/beliefs, top priorities and goals.
The goals and priorities of TC are based upon its core beliefs, which includes creating more educational opportunities locally, fostering diversity, staying involved in the community, maintaining an excellent learning environment and being committed to student success.
Their top priorities are:
- Partnering with the TC Foundation to establish a scholarship fund for non-traditional, under-employed students by the fall 2022.
- Enhancing technology and pathways tools to provide a more personalized student engagement experience to improve enrollment, persistence and retention.
- Faculty and staff will participate in diversity and inclusion professional development training.
"We take these goals very seriously, as the leadership here at TC," President Dr. Jason Smith said. "We go through these, we keep them at our fingertips and we discuss them at our meetings throughout the year. We're very excited about what we came up with, with our top priorities."
Smith said the institution's goals were determined after surveying faculty and staff who had a hand in creating the plan.
"We believe it is vital that all TC employees have an opportunity to participate in the development of institutional goals," he said.
The board also approved the purchase of scheduling software, which includes predictive software to model incoming student populations, enhance advising recommendations and provide course insights that simplify student decision-making.
TC was awarded a $105,000 grant from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation to cover implementation costs and maintenance fees for the first two years. They anticipate that starting with the 2022-2023 academic year, the annual maintenance cost will be covered with local funds.
Smith said after researching numerous options, the one the board decided on was the best available.
"Of the ones that are out there, with the analysis, being able to identify the scheduling process for each individual student and being able to track them and develop guided pathways for each student, this was the best we one could find out there. With the grant that we were able to get from (Temple), that helped offset that cost so we could afford it up front."
TC had two other purchase requests for workforce machinery — for a 5-Axis Vertical MiniMill and a CNC Lathe — where vendors did not come through. They will be putting those proposals back out, because the machinery is greatly-needed, according to Smith.
