Editor, The Smithfield Times:
The Confederate war memorial at Monument Circle is in memory of soldiers from Isle of Wight County who died during the War Between the States.
The courthouse was usually central in counties and where people came to do business and that is why they were chosen for monuments. Some monuments were not put up for years because after Reconstruction it was a long time before money could be raised. Some monuments were put up in the 1960s, the 100th anniversary of the war.
They were all put up to simply honor the soldiers who died. Nothing was done for intimidation. Today there are some political and radical groups who are trying to intimidate all of us.
Come to Smithfield High School on Thursday, Sept. 3, in support of keeping Isle of Wight’s Confederate war monument in Monument Circle.
