Kitchener will be hashing out how they plan to reopen services and reboot the economy while keeping the general population safe.

The special council meeting is to be held Monday at 12:00 p.m., and will also include the discussion of expanding restauarant patios.

"We're going to be looking both in the downtown, in Belmont village, and throughout the city," said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. "Working with restaurants to accomodate their ability to have outdoor seating in parking spots. Whether that's on city property or in the parking lot of the particular private property that hosts the restaurant in question."

Brbanovic also said that they've been lobbying the Province to streamline liquor license requirements and make them straightforward, so as to give businesses an easier time reopening.

The council meeting will also focus on a phased reopening approach of city services, such as having city hall open by appointment only.

The goal is to reopen as safely as possible, while minimizing any potential deficit. Currently, the city projects their deficit at $5.6 million.

Council is also expected to discuss their strategic plan for 2019 - 2022, which has had a COVID-sized wrench thrown into it.

While the report says that the pandemic has reinforced the relevance of the five themes of the plan, there will be 90 minutes allotted to discussing possible changes.
