President Donald Trump has a new strategy for dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
Ignore it.
As states like Arizona are seeing their largest spikes in COVID-19 cases, ICU admissions and deaths, the president seems to believe that if we pay no attention the virus, if we don’t acknowledge it, then it doesn’t exist.
He told reporters Monday, "If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, if any."
Imagine that. Denial as public health policy. Essentially he’s saying, if we don’t test for the virus then the virus doesn’t exist.
As if the people in the hospital are not sick.
As if the people in the morgue are not dead.
Would the president’s strategy work for other ailments?
How about all other diseases?
If we didn’t test for cancer would cancer cease to exist?
If we didn’t test for heart disease would heart disease cease to exist?
If we didn’t test for kidney disease or diabetes or asthma or hypertension or anything else would they all cease to exist?
I have heard from a number of individuals who have tried to apply this same strategy to other situations.
For instance, politics.
They’ve told me, for example, that if they don’t watch the news or read the papers or go online they can convince themselves that the last election went the other way and Donald Trump is not president.
How do you think that's working for them?
