LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is utilizing a new tactic to help de-escalate dangerous situations using the least amount of force, according to Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
The “team control technique” is a combination of verbal and physical interactions with a person who may be having a mental health episode, may be armed or is threatening to hurt themselves or others.
Two deputies are dedicated to teaching this type of training. Every day, the sheriff said the duo goes to different districts within the county during their roll call to train deputies on how to de-escalate a situation.
The hands-on training allows deputies to work through real-life scenarios, critique their performance and make adjustments for the future.
Within the last week, the sheriff said this training came into play when deputies received a 911 call for a man who was seen throwing an axe and machete towards a tree in a McDonald’s parking lot.
A deputy responded to the scene on Homestead Road.
According to a report, the deputy was able to remove the deadly weapons and escort the suspect to the ground.
Two other deputies on scene helped take Obed Jean-Baptiste into custody using the team control technique without hurting him, themselves or bystanders.
Jean-Baptiste was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail where he remains in custody.
