Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs know that Juju Smith-Schuster was one of the more intriguing NFL free agents this year, and that he recently re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one year, $8 million deal.
This was not because he lacked other offers or interest from other teams though. The Chiefs made a particularly interesting run at the fifth-year wide out.
According to 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City, Schuster had this to say about the Chiefs’ run at him,
“Andy Reid was just calling me and he was sending me Lombardi Trophy pictures, like constantly,” he went on to say, “Like, he texted [Lombardi Trophy pictures] to me while I was trying to make a decision, and you know I have so much respect for him and his team, so yeah.”
This is an obviously funny tactic to recruit a player, but it wasn’t without utility. Smith-Schuster cares deeply about winning and he the respect he has for Andy Reid and his winning ways was well known.
A third star next to Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill as playmakers with Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback would make for an absurdly explosive offense. Smith-Schuster would not have fixed the Chiefs’ main issue though; the offensive line. The Chiefs’ line got exposed in the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mahomes was constantly running for his life and the Chiefs will need to fill this gap if they hope to compete again.
Juju Smith-Schuster is an elite wide-receiver and he is set-up to be a free agent again next off-season. Maybe then, the Lombardi Trophy pictures will lure him to KC.
